Setting Expectations for Parents: A Guide to a Relaxed Experience

When working with parents, it's essential to establish clear expectations to ensure they feel prepared and relaxed throughout the process. Here’s how I make sure that parents know what to expect and feel comfortable during our sessions.

Communication is Key

One of the most important aspects of my approach is open communication. I believe that parents should have a clear understanding of what will take place during the session. This includes:

  • Overview of the Session: I provide a detailed outline of how the session will unfold, including what parents should bring.

  • What to Expect: I explain the environment, the timeline and welcome them to watch.

  • Timing: I inform parents about the expected duration of the session, so they can plan accordingly.

Questionnaire for Personalization

To ensure that the session reflects the family's style and preferences, I send out a questionnaire before our meeting. This helps me understand:

  • Color Preferences: I ask about their favorite colors or any specific themes they have in mind.

  • Prop Preferences: I inquire about any particular props they would like to include, ensuring that the session feels personal and special. I also give them the option to select " We give Nicole freedom to style the sets however she wants, we put all of our trust in her expertise."

Encouraging Feedback During the Session

I want parents to feel empowered to speak up during the session. While I have a vision for how the setup will look, I encourage parents to share their thoughts if something doesn’t resonate with them. This includes:

  • Specific Changes: If a particular hat or color isn’t working for them, I want them to feel comfortable letting me know. I do not ask if parents approve every item I use in the photos but usually parents feel comfortable to let me know if they prefer something different and I am happy to adjust as I want them to love their photos. My goal is to make sure they are happy.

  • Open Dialogue: I foster an environment where parents can express their preferences without hesitation, ensuring they feel heard and valued.

Conclusion

By setting clear expectations, personalizing the experience through a questionnaire, and encouraging open communication, I strive to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for parents. My goal is to ensure that they feel prepared and confident throughout the entire process, resulting in beautiful memories captured in a way that truly reflects their family's unique style.
